Bookplates in Japan
Tokyo: Meiji-Shobo, . 21.5x18.5cm: 20pp. booklet + 50 leaves. Signed limited edition #103/350. Booklet contains a limitation leaf, history of bookplates, woodcut illustrations, two mounted bookplates, and a contents section. Booklet is followed by 50 loose numbered leaves containing individually mounted bookplates, mostly in color. Booklet and bookplates are housed in publisher’s rose-colored board portfolio with paper labels and ribbon tie. Booklet is stabbed and tied using yellow string and is lightly foxed on the cover. Saito’s signature is in Japanese on the limitation leaf and with his chop stamp in red. Portfolio is rubbed with some spots of discoloration. Front board bowed with separation at spine joint. Some chipping along edges. Near Fine in a Good portfolio.
Overall, a wonderful mix of beautifully illustrated bookplates from various artists from Japan, mostly in color.
