Street & Smith specialized in inexpensive paperbacks, magazines, and comic books. Most of their publications were known as ‘pulp fiction’ and ‘dime novels’. Among its pulp fiction periodicals, Street & Smith published adventure and sea stories, detective and mystery stories, romances, science fiction, and young adult fiction. Many of the authors from Street & Smith's periodicals found their way onto the pages of the publisher's dime novels, which were issued in various series, including the New Eagle Series.
Kingley was credited as author for about thirty of Street & Smith’s dime novels. The Serpent and the Dove was one of Kingsley’s earlier contributions.
