McLaughlin’s Wonderful Animal Book

[Chicago]: W. F. McLaughlin & Co., undated (c. 1920s). 11x8.3cm: unpaginated. Wrappers bound with a single staple. Title and illustration of a bear over a blue background on front wrapper. Advertisement for McLaughlin’s XXXX Coffee to rear wrapper. Leaves contain four animal illustrations split in two, allowing for the reader to lift the flaps to create different combinations of imaginary creatures such as the “rabpard” a rabbit/leopard or a “beaceros” a beaver/rhinoceros. The rear wrapper encourages families to collect all of the wonderful animal books to make “hundreds of marvelous changes.” Minor soiling to front wrapper with some offsetting to rear wrapper. Colors are vibrant and binding is tight. Near Fine.

McLaughlin & Co. was a Chicago-based coffee company from 1852 until it was bought out by National Dairy in 1967. While the company was better known for its trade cards, this lift-the-flap style booklet appears to be rather scarce. We could only locate three other similar books online, two of which are held by the Toronto Public Library Archive. A fun early 20th century advertisement for kids and their coffee drinking parents.
