Illustrated with a frontispiece profile portrait of General Washington and an aqua-tinta plate featuring a view of the State House, at Philadelphia. Half-bound in brown leather with marbled paper boards and gilt accents. Gilt titling and decoration to the spine with five raised bands. Boards rubbed and worn along edges, with some gilt loss on spine. Minor loss of leather at top of spine. Hinges cracked, but holding. Scattered to moderate foxing throughout, most heavily to preliminary and terminal leaves, frontis, and plate. Ex-Libris, with bookplate of William Franks on front pastedown and Paul Jennings Nowland on front free endpaper. Very Good.
The author’s detailed account of his travels to the United States during 1794, written in narrative form, as he traveled from England to Nova Scotia and onward to Boston, New York, and Philadelphia. The author recounts his time spent in and between each city, capturing the exciting and the mundane, and his interactions with the locals, including a conversation with George Washington.
