Rawhide Rawlins Rides Again, or Behind the Swinging Doors. A Collection of Charlie Russell’s Favorite Stories
Pasadena: Trail’s End Publishing Co. Inc., 1948. 16.5x13cm: [4], 5-64pp., including 10 lithographed illustrations. Limited Edition, this being No. 116 of 300 printed, hand numbered on the final leaf. Original calf, with gilt lettering to front and gilt stamp to rear, using the author’s personally designed stamping die. Illustrated endpapers, designed using four of Russell’s “studies”. Light wear to edges and joints, with some rubbing to leather, mostly to rear. Small dampstain at head and tail of spine. Internally clean, with several leaves unopened. Very Good.
Scarce limited edition of this collection of somewhat spicy and off-color vignettes favored by Western artist Charles Russell, and which could not be published in Russell’s biography. Each story is accompanied by a reproduction of work by Russell and other Western artists. The copyright page captures the essence of this amusing little volume by stating,“Not copyrighted 1948. Why should we give the Library of Congress two copies of this rare book? Anyone is welcome to tell these stories as his own.”.
