Mrs. Overtheway’s Remembrances

London: George Bell and Sons, 1908. 21x17cm: 118pp., including 10 illustrations. Flexible paper-covered boards printed in black, with an illustration on front and advertisements on rear. Moderate soiling and rubbing to boards. Spine darkened, with brief exposure along joints. Light wear to edges with corners bumped. Faint dampstain to front board. A few areas of foxing to endpapers. Pages lightly toned, otherwise internally clean. Good.

A later printing of Ewing’s first children’s book, originally serialized in Aunt Judy’s Magazine between 1866 and 1868, before being released in book form the following year. The nostalgic narrative centers around Ida, a young orphan girl, who becomes intrigued by her elderly neighbor, Mrs. Overtheway. What begins as fascination soon morphs into meaningful connection, as Mrs. Overtheway shares stories from her past – her remembrances – with Ida, serving as a gentle form of healing through storytelling.
