Beautiful full sprinkled calf with gilt double rule to boards. Spine with five raised bands and six compartments featuring gilt titling and decorations. Two red spine labels containing the title and volume number in one and the author in the other. All edges gilt. Lovely gilt dentelles and vibrant marbled endpapers. Leather lightly scuffed and rubbed, with light to moderate wear along edges and joints. Front joints of Volumes 1 and 4 beginning to separate, but holding firm. Hinges tender. Pages bright and clean, with occasional light foxing. Overall, Better than Very Good.
Later Edition of this work, originally translated from Spanish by Charles Jarvis, Esq. in 1742. This edition is quite scarce, with only seven holdings in OCLC and only two other copies traced at auction (RareBookHub). Bound ca. early 20th century by Zaehnsdorf for Brentano's, New York. Affixed to the front pastedown in each volume is the armorial bookplate of Oliver Corse Hoyt (1890 - 1946), grandson of Oliver Hoyt, the founder of Hoyt Brothers, one of the best known leather merchants in New York City during the second half of the 19th century.
