Blue cloth-covered boards with title and decorative border stamped in black on front and spine. Wear to board edges, with exposure to corners and fraying to spine ends. Scattered areas of discoloration from moisture to cloth, mostly impacting front and spine. Significant dampstaining to endpapers and preliminaries, also impacting the bottom edge of the textblock, though pages remain bright. Spotting to text block edges. Binding sound. The Propaganda Fide Colleges were established in South America during the colonial period to train missionaries to explore remote territories and convert local populations. At the time of this book’s publication, approximately 80% of Peru’s inhabitants spoke some form of the Quechua language. This statistic became the impetus for the creation of this dictionary. However, it’s purpose was not only to help Spanish-speaking missionaries understand the various Quechua dialects, but also, and more importantly in their view, to teach the indigenous people of Peru the Spanish language in order to assimilate them to “the life of the cultured” and to “purify their crude ideas.” (transl.).

An important linguistic record documenting early dialects of the Quechua language family, preserved largely before sustained Spanish influence, with at least one of the recorded dialects now recognized as endangered.
