Handbill Advertisement for The Complete Herbalist, or the People Their Own Physicians, by the Use of Nature’ Remedies
Jersey City, NJ: Dr. O. Phelps Brown, [1865]. 15x10.5cm. Handbill printed on two sides. Scattered chipping and closed tears along edges, without loss to text. One side a tad soiled. Very Good.
Handbill distributed by Dr. O. Phelps Brown to promote his self-published book, The Complete Herbalist. Brown promised readers access to the “great curative properties” of rare herbs, roots, barks, and plants, along with a generous collection of herbal recipes that could be prepared with minimal effort. The volume sold for $2, roughly the equivalent of $45 today. And for anyone lacking the time, inclination, or confidence to brew their own remedies, Brown was happy to sell ready-made preparations through druggists across the United States, Canada, and Europe. Better yet, if your town lacked a druggist, Brown suggested opening one yourself and stocking his products, a venture he claimed could double your income. How thoughtful!
